Dental implants are widely considered the gold standard for replacing missing teeth. They do more than restore your smile. They improve oral health, chewing ability, confidence, and overall quality of life.
Because dental implants fuse directly with your jawbone, the process should not be rushed. Healing time varies from person to person, but for most patients the complete implant process takes approximately four to seven months from start to finish.
After reviewing your medical history and three dimensional CBCT imaging to evaluate bone health and anatomy, Dr. Hafen can provide a personalized timeline based on your individual needs.
How Many Appointments Are Needed for Dental Implants?
Most patients complete the implant process in five to seven appointments, depending on their oral health, bone density, and whether additional procedures such as bone grafting are needed.
We understand that this may sound like a lot in today’s fast paced world. Some things, however, take time to do properly. Dr. Hafen does not take shortcuts when it comes to your dental care.
Step by Step: The Dental Implant Process
First Appointment: Preliminary Evaluation
This visit sets the foundation for a successful implant.
During this appointment, our team will:
- Review your medical and dental history
- Discuss medications and any special considerations
- Take necessary X rays, CBCT imaging, and facial scans
If you currently have removable appliances such as dentures or partials, please bring them with you.
Second Appointment: Implant Consultation
By this visit, Dr. Hafen has fully reviewed your case and will:
- Walk you through your customized treatment plan
- Explain each step of the implant process
- Answer questions and address any concerns
You will also meet with our Treatment Coordinator to review financial details and discuss payment options if desired.
Third Appointment: Extraction, Grafting, and Implant Placement
Depending on your situation, this visit may include tooth extraction, bone grafting, and dental implant placement.
Sedation options are available if you are nervous. Most patients are surprised by how comfortable this appointment is due to the advanced technology used in our office.
In some cases, Dr. Hafen may recommend delaying implant placement to allow additional healing time. If this applies to you, it will be discussed clearly in advance.
Fourth Appointment: Post Operative Visit
Single implant patients typically return around six weeks after placement so we can confirm the implant is integrating properly and healing as expected.
Fifth Appointment: Scanning and Impressions for the Crown
You are almost there.
Depending on how quickly you heal, this appointment usually takes place three to five months after implant placement. At this visit, digital scans or impressions are taken to design your custom implant crown.
Sixth Appointment: Seating of the Implant Crown
Congratulations.
Your implant crown is placed, and you can eat, floss, and live life just as you would with a natural tooth. The goal is a result that looks, feels, and functions like the real thing.
Why Patience Matters with Dental Implants
Dental implants rely on a biological process called osseointegration, where the bone grows around and secures the implant. Rushing this process increases the risk of complications or implant failure.
By following a careful and proven timeline, we help ensure long term success and durability for your implant.
