It is normal to experience some bleeding after an extraction. Bite on a moist gauze for 20 to 30 minutes until bleeding subsides. If bleeding continues after the first day, bite on a damp tea bag. The tannins in the tea will act as a natural clotting agent. If you experience an abnormal amount of bleeding. Please contact our office immediately or contact your primary medical provider or 911.
The body heals the extraction site by forming a blood clot over the wound. Do not rinse for 24 hours following an extraction. Do not spit or use a straw for 72 hours following the extraction. Doing so could dislodge the blood clot and impair your body’s ability to heal. Be sure to keep fingers, tongue and food away from the extraction site.
You may experience some swelling and stiffness. In some instances, bruising may occur.
Prescribed pain medication and ice compresses can help relieve symptoms. You may apply ice to your face for 15 minute intervals (on 15 minutes, off 15 minutes) for the first 6-8 hours. 24 hours after an extraction, you may rinse with warm salt water (1/2 tsp. of salt to 8oz. of warm water). Please swish and spit gently. If you were prescribed a mouthwash, please use as directed starting 24 hours after an extraction.
A soft diet is required for the first 24 hours. Lots of fluids is also advised. Refrain from alcohol use for the first 24 hours after an extraction. It is recommended that you do not smoke. If you do smoke, wait at least 24 hours after an extraction, cover the wound with gauze and smoke on the other side of your mouth.
If antibiotics are prescribed, please complete entire regimen of medication. Follow instructions for any pain medication and take as needed.
After the first 24 hours after an extraction, you may rinse with warm salt water (1/2 tsp. of salt to 8oz. of warm water). Please swish and spit gently.
