Do you have teeth that are missing? Then a dental bridge can help even out your smile, reduce your risk of gum disease, correct bite issues and in some cases, even improve your speech.
A bridge is a false tooth which is used between two porcelain crowns. The two crowns are attached onto your regular teeth on either side of the false tooth. In situations where there are teeth on only one side of an open space in your gums, then a dentist may use a cantilever bridge which supports the false tooth from only one end.
The ideal candidate for a bridge is someone who not only has missing teeth, but also good oral hygiene practices. If gaps are left unfilled for too long, this may cause the surrounding teeth to drift out of alignment. Additionally, spaces for missing teeth can cause your other teeth and gums to become far more susceptible to tooth decay and disease.
When you go to get a bridge made, the dentist will start by preparing the teeth on either side of the gap for the false tooth. He or she will give you a mild anesthetic to numb the area and then shave down each tooth to to accommodate the thickness of the crown.
The dentist will then make an impression from which the bridge, false tooth and crowns will be made and will give you a temporary bridge to wear. At your next appointment, your permanent bridge will be adjusted and then cemented to your teeth. With proper care, it can last up to 10 years or more.
