We understand that by the time you arrive home after your dental implant appointment, it can be hard to remember everything you were told. And let’s be honest, that instruction sheet you had a moment ago may already be missing.
No worries. We will walk you through the most important post operative instructions again here so you can feel confident during your recovery.
Immediately After Your Procedure
- Leave the gauze in place for the first 30 minutes.
- After that, you may change the gauze every 20 to 30 minutes as needed until the bleeding stops. This typically occurs within a couple of hours.
If you notice swelling, you may use an ice pack or even a bag of frozen peas. Apply it 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off as needed.
Take it easy for the first few days following your procedure. Try to limit physical activity as much as possible for the first three days.
And this is the hard one. Please keep your fingers and tongue away from the surgical site. Seriously. Just stop.
What Is Normal After Dental Implant Surgery?
After implant placement, it is common to wonder whether what you are experiencing is normal. Below are answers to the most common questions we hear.
Is swelling normal after dental implant placement?
Yes. Some swelling and even mild bruising can occur following surgery and is not a cause for concern. Using an ice pack can help reduce swelling if needed.
Is it normal to see blood on my pillow in the morning?
Yes. Even a small amount of blood mixed with saliva can look like a lot, especially within the first 24 hours after surgery.
If bleeding continues, gently bite down on moist gauze or a damp tea bag for 20 minutes to help control it.
Why can’t I spit or use a straw for 72 hours?
After dental surgery, your body forms a blood clot at the surgical site, similar to how a scab forms on your skin. Creating suction by spitting or using a straw can dislodge that clot.
If the clot is removed, bleeding may restart and healing can be delayed.
Will it hurt?
Some discomfort after surgery is normal, but it is usually well controlled with over-the-counter ibuprofen.
If you are unable to take ibuprofen, please let our office know so we can recommend a safe alternative for you.
How can I speed up the healing process?
The first 72 hours after surgery are the most important.
You can support healing by:
- Drinking plenty of water
- Avoiding alcohol and hot beverages for the first three days
- Following a soft food diet and avoiding spicy, hard, or crunchy foods
- Cleaning the area gently and remembering not to spit after brushing for the first three days
- Resting and avoiding heavy lifting or activities that raise your heart rate
This is a great excuse to relax on the couch and catch up on your favorite shows. We encourage it.
