Dentists first started using MDIs as temporary implants. But then they learned that bone in a patient’s jaw would grow around MDIs making them very difficult to remove. Since then, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved mini dental implants for long term use for procedures involving crowns, bridges and removable dentures.
The one basic similarity between mini and standard implants is that they use titanium as the base for the replacement teeth that dentists anchor to a patient’s jawbone. However, MDIs are smaller and thinner than standard ones, require less drilling and heal faster.
MDIs are especially good for people who have lower dentures that won’t stay in place. This procedure is known as denture stabilization. Once the implants are in place, the bottom denture then steps onto the implants, offering better support and retention.
Many dentists prefer MDIs not only because they are easier to work with, but also because they cost anywhere from 25 to 50% less than standard implants. This makes implant therapy much more accessible to people who need and want it.
